I think with John Brown the issue was the random nature of his selection. That was mindless revenge.
Necessary violence included standing up to Germany when it invaded France in Franco-Prussian war (Germany had just become a unified country) and in WW1 and 2.
The alternative would have been to have gone willingly into its arms as it were.
As regards the current war, WW3 that we are in which is a wars of words, I say our weapons are not guns, tanks and planes but buns, thanks and plain speaking!
And the ammunition is love!
